The Redesign
When the Economic Club of Washington, DC—a leading nonprofit, nonpartisan forum for dialogue on economic and public policy issues—wanted to refresh its annual report in 2018, they turned to Washingtonian Custom Media. Their goal? A more modern, visually cohesive publication that would highlight their milestone events, featured speakers, and team initiatives.
Using a content outline and photography provided by the Club, WCM’s creative team rolled up their sleeves to deliver a fresh design. We introduced streamlined layouts that allowed content and imagery to work in harmony, while our editorial team brought structure and narrative flow to the written content. The result was a revitalized report that felt both elevated and familiar—a publication that better told the story of the Club’s work and impact.
A Digital-First Approach
In the years that followed, the project evolved. As events went virtual, so did the report. WCM adapted the format into a fully digital experience, integrating interactive elements that aligned with the Club’s broader online presence. This strategic pivot not only kept the publication relevant—it helped it reach new audiences across digital platforms.
Today, the report is published both online and in print. WCM continues to produce both formats, including the printing and fulfillment of mailing materials like envelopes and personalized notes, ensuring a polished and professional delivery at every touchpoint.
Capturing DC on the Cover
Each year’s cover design is an opportunity to reflect the Club’s strong connection to the District. In 2023, the Club wanted a fresh perspective—something unmistakably DC, but less expected. Our photo team staged a custom shoot at the iconic Hirshhorn Museum, capturing a modern architectural landmark that gave the report a contemporary edge. The new look was a hit and set the tone for future covers to continue creatively representing the spirit of Washington.
