The Task
In 2013, Washingtonian Custom Media partnered with the School of Foreign Service to produce the school’s new flagship publication, SFS Magazine, and we continue to deliver powerful, original editorial and beautiful design with each issue. This past year, the school’s students, staff, and alumni network were once again on the frontlines of international events, and the SFS community mourned the loss of beloved professor Madeleine Albright. The school wanted to honor her memory by celebrating her life and highlighting the many community members continuing her legacy.
The Solution
A two-page spread at the front of the issue compiled images of Madeleine Albright alongside vignettes from past students, beginning the magazine by underscoring her impact on the school and generations of international leaders. Washingtonian Custom Media’s writers crafted impactful articles, telling the stories of students, alumni, and faculty that emphasized their dedication to upholding legacies like Albright’s. The magazine’s main feature story highlighted the resiliency and resolve of the SFS community after the US military’s exit from Afghanistan, with strong reporting and image selection to accentuate this theme. Using SFS’s vast photo archives and WCM’s connections with photographers and access to stock images, we curated images for the magazine’s cover and interior. Our designers perfectly integrated these visuals with our custom editorial work to create a complete and noteworthy publication.
